Junior Mason Carrillo relaxed at school after a top placement at the state wrestling championships.

The 2023 CIF State Wrestling Championships were held at the Mechanics Bank Arena in Bakersfield from February 23-25. Congratulations to our two students who qualified to compete at the recent championships. Senior Ireland Donnelly made it all the way to the top 12 in state.

Junior Mason Carrillo placed 7th at the state championships, becoming only the 2nd boys’ state placer in Royal High School history. This is an amazing accomplishment! Mason was ranked 12th going into the tournament and beat the number 5, number 9, and 10th ranked wrestlers to place 7th.

Carrillo said about the state championships, “It was tough and nervewracking but it was exciting to experience all of it.” Carrillo also added regarding the sport of wrestling, “I like wrestling because it’s something you get to work through with all the training and you put a lot of work and faith into your training and it’s all worth it in the final result. If you’d like the same results from the best team on campus, I recommend you join.”
