As the year is coming to an end, woodshop students have been working on their last few projects. Some people may think woodshop is just building a birdhouse with some popsicle sticks, but it is much more than that. When students build projects they go through many things such as safety training, measuring, precision, and patience. Not only do they build the projects, students also learn to calculate the value of their work based on the type of wood and key details. Students learn where every type of wood comes from and how to work with them.

β€œTo take woodshop you really have to take your time and enjoy what you’re doing or else it will not get the full potential of how this class can prepare you for success,” said Junior Christian Ramos. The first project of the year was a dresser box which is where students learned to use all the basic tools and learn the properties of wood working. A small second project was chopsticks, small projects like these give students something to do while waiting for things to dry or machines to be free on our main projects.

Going into the second semester students created a christmas tree which helped students how to use precise measuring to make an eye appealing decoration. A current project is the wall hanging where students are learning how to work with veneer and also making an aesthetic design that shows the artistic side of woodworking. The last project of the class is the bowl with salad forks. In this project students are introducing the lathe machine which requires a lot of skill and patience. In all these projects students learn practical skills that can prepare us for a real job. β€œI have had students sell their work and learn that if you can do good this class can lead you to a good career,” said woodshop teacher Mr. David Sorenson.
