On Wednesday, May 21 at 7 p.m., the newly brought back Highlander Empowerpuff Team began to play their competitive flag football game to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer. Supporters and audience members were required to pay $7 at entry, and 90% of all the collected funds would be donated towards women’s breast cancer foundation. After the game, the Highlander team raised more than $1200 to give back for a good cause, while engaging the audience members throughout the entire endeavor.
This game started as a CSI Project by juniors Ivy Roessell and Avery Misiowiec, as a way to bring back this game to the Kingdom as it was abandoned for many years. While raising money for women’s breast cancer, Roessell and Misiowiec hosted a flag football game between junior and senior Lady Highlanders to unite each individual game by fostering patriotism for each individual grade. All the players practiced before the game on their own time, coached by football players in their own individual grade. By the end of the night, juniors won by 28 to 6. To celebrate, most of the players with family and friends went to Topper’s Pizza afterwards for a delicious post-game meal.
Roessell shared, “I wanted this game back for my CSI project as I was really passionate about breast cancer awareness, and I believe this game can really help,” further sharing, “Plus, this game will be really fun to play and be apart of as well.” Junior Sydney Berry, who also took part in the game as a safety player, said, “It was so much fun playing with all my friends and I had an amazing time being apart of this experience!”
