It is finally May, and the Coastal Canyon League Final meet was held May 2, from 3-8 p.m. at Moorpark High School. Many fast track runners from the Highlander Track and Field were chosen to participate in the final league meet because of their qualifying performances in previous track meets.
The Highlander runners were so happy for each other, and uplifting to the other runners. Many hurdlers from the Kingdom were qualified to go up against many fast students. Some kids from Junior Varsity were qualified and most of the Varsity team went to the meet. Freshmen Alanna Vannetty was so excited for her friends and herself. She thought it was so cool because she had to go up against her close friend, freshmen Madison Vulku, and they got 1st, and 2nd, place in the 100 meter hurdle. Vannetty said, “It’s supposed to be hard because if it wasn’t hard everyone would be able to do it, but I’m glad I was able to compete.” Many of the students tried their best and even though some didn’t beat their personal records they were very ecstatic.
Coaches and organizers were proud of the athletes, teamwork, and sportsmanship, called the meet a success for both competition and community. Vulku was nervous when she was in blocks ready to run. She said, “It makes me really nervous getting ready to be in blocks and competing, but once I am on the track my mind goes silent and I’m doing everything I can to win.”
The crowd was cheering every athlete on, and students were all thrilled to be running for league. This league meet proved to be more than just a competition, it was a testament to the hard work and determination that define the spirit of track and field.
