Seniors have heard the phrases “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and “What are your plans after high school?” a million times. On Thursday, May 1, Senior Decision Day event was held; when seniors finally locked in their answers about the paths they plan to take for the future.
The event took place in the MPR from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Students had to fill out a Google Form to RSVP. All participating students were given a slip and were pulled out of their third-period class to attend.
Everyone was asked to bring and wear college gear from the school they plan to attend next year or already have attended. Teachers, families, and students all wore college gear such as hoodies, shirts, sweatpants, bags, pins, and hats. Social studies teacher and father Mr. Brian Dennert was at the event supporting his daughter, Rory Dennert, who plans to attend CSU San Marcos in northern San Diego. Mr. Dennert said, “My eyes were a little watery early, but I’m holding together. It’s fun, and it gets real when you get to see the decisions they make and where they get to go. The event was fun, but definitely emotional.”
There were multiple stations where seniors could participate in fun activities. The theme of the event was airport/traveling. At the first station, students were given a “flight ticket” where they could write their name, where they are going in the future, and where they are coming from. They were then given markers, Sharpies, and highlighters to decorate their tickets.
The next station involved stickers and a map of the U.S.A. Some seniors are planing on going out of state, so stickers were placed all across the map. At the third station, students used paper and markers to fold paper airplanes and write their names, graduation year, and future destinations.
When asked about her future, senior Deanna Shrater said, “I’m sad to leave my friends behind, but this is a whole new chapter in my life, and I’m excited to see what the future has for me.” She plans to attend UC Santa Cruz. Senior Sydney Cretz, who plans to attend Chapman University, said, “I think it’s super exciting.”
The next station offered goodie bags and water. The goodie bags were filled with popcorn, pretzels, and Red Vines. Finally, the last stations were decorated with balloons and college flags so students could take photos.
On the main stage, a video played featuring seniors’ graduation photos and their future plans. In front of the stage was a huge table filled with flags from colleges such as CSU Channel Islands, Moorpark College, UC Davis, and many more.
