All of Mrs. Goldman’s Anatomy classes including Honors Anatomy have been recently learning about the five senses. Students will have an exam on the topics such as smell, taste, touch, sound, and most importantly sight. For the test it is crucial you know how to label the major features inside of an eyeball and pupil. Studying the eye’s major features include the eyelids, cornea, and iris. To give all students a better understanding there was a lab on Monday, April 21, known as the cow eye dissection. This up-close activity will gave students a chance to navigate around the veins, muscles, and membranes inside of an eyeball.
In groups of three, students put on a pair of gloves, examined the cow eye, and made three interesting observations. Senior Oscar Estrada said, “When I was touching the cow eye, it felt super rubbery and looked very pale. My group and I enjoyed the lab because we had never done anything like this before in class.” After students made observations their instructions were to identify the three layers they sliced through when dissecting. Junior Joshua Villasenor said, “Using the scalpel to cut open the eye was super nerve wracking since you need a steady hand. Without cutting too deep, I was able to pinpoint the three layers and label them for my lab sheet.”
If you are interested in engaging in observational labs, remember to take Anatomy during your junior or senior year!
