Looking to pursue a career in the medical field? Many of the Human Anatomy and Physics classes went on an extremely exciting and enlightening field trip to the Simi Institute. Many students in the future hope to become involved in the medical field and be nurses, surgeons, or doctors. Senior Primrose Namara said, “I want to attend medical school and study to become a plastic surgeon. I think it would be a great feeling to help someone achieve the look they want with just one operation.” Lots of other professions were also mentioned like becoming a Phlebotomist, Pharmacy Technician, Respiratory Therapist, and Emergency Medical Technician, all of which require the student interested to be at least 18 to partake in the online courses.
Students left at 9:15 a.m. and arrived at the Simi Institute by 9:40 a.m. Once arriving everyone was asked to sit inside of the MPR to listen in on an important presentation. Senior Addison Macneal said, “I enjoyed the meeting because we got a live demonstration on how a Phlebotomist collects blood samples from patients for laboratory tests.” After the meeting was over, students were moved into live classes for different professions.
The first class was demonstrating how oxygen gets pumped into lungs, a real lung from a pig was shown. Sophomore Natalia ReyesRosas said, “I was very excited because the teacher allowed us to feel the pig lungs as long as we had gloves, the lungs felt super rubbery and squishy.” The second class students were moved into was a surgeon operating simulation, where the teacher went over all the precautions surgeons must take when operating on someone. Senior Kevin Mendez said, “It looks really difficult to be a surgeon since you have to be aware of all your tools and equipment, It was interesting to watch them train though.” After all the classes students went back to the MPR, and then walked to the buses. All students arrived back at Royal at 12:25 p.m. just in time for lunch and 5th period.
