On Monday, January 24, National Honors Society hosted a meeting for all the members to get started off for the new year, and to decorate bookmarks for the local library and elementary schools as a way to make some volunteer hours. This meeting took place at lunch in the CSI Room, giving a place for all the members of NHS to relax, eat, and decorate bookmarks for a good cause. Each bookmark counted as 30 minutes of volunteer time, giving every club member a chance to recover time if they have a busy schedule.
These bookmarks were to be given to the Simi Valley Public Library and elementary schools throughout Simi Valley to motivate readers and keep reading an ongoing activity amongst our community. Upon entering the CSI Room, there was a large display of markers, colored pencils, paper, and stickers to choose from to create the best possible product. NHS hosts a multitude of meetings such as this, with various volunteer opportunities, to bring together every NHS member and to maximize an impact within the community.
Junior Sophia Nunez shares her insight behind her projects, and stated, “I love how these little projects are so much fun while also bringing me closer to my community,” showing how one little act of kindness can make a change. Junior Natasha Paloian shared, “This was a very nice experience as it is a nice way to take my mind off of school, and just hang out with friends and volunteer by simple acts of kindness.”
