On Saturday, January 25, the Highlander Academic Decathlon team (AcaDeca) all arrived to Pacifica High School early in the morning dressed classy in business casual to take on the day. This was the first actual competition day for the team, as they had to give a speech, take an interview, which all the students prepared for to win individual awards. They also participate in an exciting Super Quiz which racks up more points for the team’s total score in customized shirts to represent our talented school.
As the team arrived in formal attire, it was clear they all meant business. All the students took their time to revise their personal speeches and interviews before it was time to set forth to the judges. Every student did spectacularly, only showcasing the effortless talent the Highlanders are capable of. Soon, everyone changed into their own personal AcaDeca t-shirts with this years theme, climate change, adorned on it. Finally, the team took on Super Quiz which was extremely exciting, and though the Highlanders did not win, it only showcased how much more of an effort they will make next year.
When asked about the competitive day, secretary of AcaDeca, senior Ariana Garcia shared, “It was very bittersweet because it is my last competition, but it was very engaging and fun to be with the team and support each other.” President of AcaDeca, senior Karen Truong stated, “Competition day was tons of fun, we cheered on our teams during the Super Quiz. During the speech and interview portions, we all did our best to be professional, yet add our own charm to our sections.” Through all of this, it is clear AcaDeca shined bright for their first competition day, and the second day will only be more fruitful. At the end of that day, each competing Highlander left tired, but motivated for what is to come next. Go Highlanders!
