On January 6, 2024, Amanda Borg, captain of the girl’s lacrosse team announced her early verbal commitment to play NCAA DII lacrosse at Belmont Abbey College. The school is located in Belmont, North Carolina, and also where Three-Time IWLCA/US Lacrosse All-American Theresa Breslin played. Recently, Belmont Abbey College women’s lacrosse team just claimed the No. 25 spot in the week-two ranking by the IWLCA DII Coaches Poll. This poll ranks the top 25 schools in Division II women’s lacrosse teams weekly based on performance with 121 schools being eligible and only 25 making the list.
Borg later officially signed her commitment to Belmont Abbey College on November 13, 2024.
For Amanda, the recruiting process started in June of 2023 while she was playing club lacrosse on the East Coast when she received some offers from DII schools, one of them being Belmont Abbey. Later, when she was back at home the recruitment window for DI schools opened and she also received some calls from some DI schools as well. However, she spoke highly of Belmont Abbey saying that “their communication seems friendly.” So when she toured it for the first time it seemed to be everything she was looking for, she liked their coaching staff, the team, and the overall environment. After visiting the school and taking some time to think it over, she decided that it was meant to be. And that’s when she announced her verbal commitment on her Instagram in January of 2024. And later signed officially on Signing Day, November 13, 2024. Her family, teammates, and friends were thrilled by the announcement, she shared, “My mom and dad were like the biggest supporters so they were extremely excited for me because they knew my hard work was going to pay off and the same with my teammates. And with my friends, they were very supportive and they just were excited for me.”
To be able to play in that caliber of sports it is not just natural born talent, but also a strong work ethic. Borg shared, “Any dream you have or accomplishment you want to reach, you can definitely do it because there’s nothing stopping you so if you just put in the hard work you can always get to that point.” When asked how she balances both academics and lacrosse, she shared, “I will go to school and focus on school during school. And then when I go home, I will finish some homework. And then I try to go to the gym or go to the park and play lacrosse.” By staying present and prioritizing tasks, she is able to maintain a balance between both academics and athletics
With the lacrosse season just around the corner, Borg described what a game day is like for her. Since lacrosse games are at night, she eats a light meal beforehand, typically some chicken and rice. She gets to the stadium early to support the JV team. As well as getting her hair braided by another teammate as a part of their ritual. She mentions that while warming up the announcers would play a playlist curated by the team, she disclosed, “Our announcer puts on one song specifically for me right before the game, which is Thunderstruck by ACDC, which I love and then we get into the game.”
The transition between high school lacrosse to NCAA DII lacrosse presents new challenges, but she is ready to take them on. “I think that waking up in the morning and every single day having practice and weights for four hours is going to be difficult for me and the weather playing in that but I think I can adjust to that pretty okay,” she admitted. Despite these challenges she is still eager to play at the next level, she exclaimed, “I’m excited to build my game and get better at lacrosse because I don’t want to stay at that high school club level. I really want to go and try my best and work as hard as I can to reach that division two level and even further than that try to just keep building my game.” Seeing as how she has conquered lacrosse at Royal and given her dedication, work ethic, and passion for the sport there’s no doubt that Amanda Borg will thrive at Belmont Abbey next year.
