Holidays are something that everyone celebrates. However, no one has exactly the same thoughts and experiences when it comes to them depending on their culture. Some may enjoy different food, others may use different decorations, etc. On October 29, the Kingdom’s staff explained some of their favorite traditions for some of their favorite holidays.
Ms. Rita Zepeda, who works at the front desk of the office. Zepeda said that for Christmas, “We try to make tamales. We all get together with lots of family and friends and we all have our own little stations.” Ms. Reina Zapata’s assistant, Ms. Alicia Pelletier, shared that her family has been “…going to Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving. It’s fun to spend it in the mountains.” Her favorite holiday is Christmas, because she likes to be with her kids, now that they are moved out.
Different cultures or ethnic backgrounds may impact your opinions on your holidays or how to celebrate them. The front desk receptionist, Ms. Jennifer Meyer Barr’s family is Irish, so that affects which holidays are important to them. She said, “We do something for Saint Patrick’s Day every year, we have a big family dinner.” Another tradition she has is at Christmas when her family decorates the house together.
Assistant Principal of Athletics and Activities, including ASB, Patti Myszkowski, said, “Celebrating Christmas with my family is my favorite. We do some Polish traditions with my family.” She participates in something called Oplatki, where you give good wishes, hopes, and prayers for family members. Assistant Principal, Ms. Patricia Russel’s assistant, Ms. Jacqueline Bircsale, said, “My favorite holiday is Christmas. I like the cold weather and getting together with family.” For the holidays, all her family gathers and have dinners together.
Library Technician, Linda Rodriguez, said that at Christmas, “I like to get my family together to decorate the tree, and decorate the house. It’s something we enjoy doing together.” Her family has decorations that have been passed down from her parents and grandparents. They try to have new things every year, as well.
In summary, depending on religion, culture, or family history, every family celebrates just slightly differently than anyone else in the world. Every family has their own traditions and memories that are special to those involved. No two people are exactly the same when it comes to celebrating holidays. Highlander staff all have different backgrounds and traditions and that changes how they celebrate.
