On Friday, September 20, during lunch in the CSI room, a guest speaker and school board candidate, Mike James, came and spoke about his experiences in schools. He spoke about many things, including how some school restrooms do not have doors on them, and how he had to speak up and try to fundraise money for the restroom doors.
Also, James spoke about how he hated art from the 3rd grade to the 10th grade, and how he couldn’t draw. He told the crowd that an art teacher he had in the 10th grade said that he can teach anyone on how to draw. James then started to like art, and that is what he is doing right now as a day job. He said that if he was to be elected into the school board he would not quit his day job and how he would help the kids in SVUSD make the schools better.
James said that the Brown Bag Lunch was a great experience to show what he can do, and what happened over his time in school. James also said, “It’s a rare experience to get the perspective of the student which is the true voice of our school.” Mr. Brian Dennert, coordinator of Brown Bag Lunches, said, “I enjoy that students ask questions and that the students voice is important.” Many of the school board candidates spoke at our school during different Brown Bag Lunches over the last few weeks.
