On Friday, August 30, as the school day is rearing towards it’s end, the first football game took place to start to school year off right, especially for the freshman class as they got the opportunity to enter the game for free with student ID. Link Crew hosted a buzzing tailgate party for freshman to start the Neon football game right. As they served popsicles, played games such as Jenga and Corn-Hole, as well as taking pictures with the golden sun-this created fun and anticipation in the atmosphere setting the Highlanders towards success.
As freshman entered the gates, they were all headed to the AFJROTC quad to spend quality time in the Tailgate Party hosted by Link Crew. This party gave freshmen the chance to spend exciting time with Leadership and Link Crew, play games, enjoy some popsicles, and learn the chants for the student section. While neon was pervading the crowd, freshmen got to see the first look of how the student section prepares for home games. Link Crew and Leadership member, junior Layla Salinas shares, “It was so cool to see the upperclassmen and freshmen hanging out together,” also adding, “There was a lot of energy that definitely carried over into the student section.”
As the game started at 7 p.m. freshman scattered around in the student section crowd. The Highlanders won against the Dos Pueblos Chargers (20-13), setting the stage for a fruitful football season. The energy in the student section was exceeding, with lots of cheering, music, and enthusiasm. The class of 2028 got their first taste of a football game that did not go to waste, and the excitement is high for what is to come.
