Summer school, dead period for sports, and the next school year are quickly coming up. To help students prepare for the future it would be helpful to add these key events to your schedule. Summer school runs from July 1-26, dead period is June 10-23, and first day of school for the next school year is August 15.
Students take summer school classes to either get ahead or for credit recovery. If they received a D or F in a class that is an A-G requirement they must retake the class. Especially students that are looking to go to a university will have to retake the classes to be eligible. The classes will be a lot faster because they have to squeeze a semester full of information into an 18 day class. Summer school this summer will take place at Santa Susana High School. Counselor Aamina Hennings said, “Students should always try their best during the school year, so that summer school is not required. I encourage students to always speak to their counselor to discuss summer school and their plans after high school.”
All sports have a dead period during the summer. After long practices and constant beat on a body the dead period helps students retain some of their focus and recover their bodies. According to UC health, when you are constantly working out you are breaking down muscles in your body and rest is what helps your muscles heal and get even stronger. Wrestler Ben Kirk said, “The dead period helps me recuperate my mind and body. It is nice to get a break from something because I feel like it helps me come back refreshed and motivated to become even better.”
This school year is close to ending so students should be thinking and planning for the next school year. One important date for new freshman is August 9 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The freshman will be shown around campus, get their identification cards, books, computers, and even meet some of their teachers.
