On Tuesday, March 12, varsity boys tennis played at home against Viewpoint High School. Royal had a great win, with a score of 12-6.
Biology and physics teacher Mr. Hixon has been coaching boys tennis for 17 years, and girls tennis for 15 years. “I played tennis for Royal from 1985-1987 and so when the positions became available, I jumped at the opportunity,” Hixon said about why he chose to coach tennis.
Tennis players choose to play for different reasons. For example, freshman Kyle Miller said, “It sounded like a better option than PE.” Alternatively, junior Harris Steele said, “I play soccer as my main sport, but they need more people so it’s kind of my rest sport.”
Varsity boys tennis has won all their games so far, except for their game against Newbury Park High School on March 3.
If you don’t know how tennis works, the games can be hard to follow. The scoring is complicated because it uses “love” as zero and then the scores go 15-30-40. Tennis teams often have to win two out of three games to win a set and then the first team to win ten sets wins the match.
Congratulations to boys tennis on all their wins and good luck on your next games.
