Order on the court
Tuesday, January 31, brought the very last Royal vs Simi Varsity basketball game. The Senior Night ceremony started at 7 p.m. with an announcer speaking on behalf of the speeches the seniors prepared. Each senior walked through with their selected family members; some were given flowers, that the seniors then passed on to their parents.
When #24, senior Maddox Montolfo walked through, he dedicated his speech to his father, Sergio Montolfo who recently passed, and the audience gave him a standing ovation. This was followed by a recitation of the National Anthem and a moment of silence for Mr. Montolfo.
As the game started, tension began to build. Royal’s side of the stadium was packed to the brim, and Simi’s student section took one section of the bleachers. Both teams switched off with high scores, but in the last half, Royal fell behind.
The boys gave up a tough fight in the final quarter but unfortunately lost against Simi 60-49. However, in the last seconds of the game #10 was given the ball by #24, and made an incredible shot from the side of the court. Even with the loss of the game, fans all stood up and cheered for this shot and went down to congratulate the team.
Speaking on his amazing shot, #10 Nick Chimarusti said, “It was cool to have a farewell shot.” The points made by each player are as listed: Romano 20, Arnold 8, Hill 6, Suarez 6, Wright 3, Chimarusti 3, Lowry 2, Hurwitz 1.
