On Wednesday, September 11, at 5:30 p.m. Royal hosted the annual SVUSD College Fair in the quad areas. College fairs are an opportunity for students who hope to pursue higher education, connect and discover different universities. Students from all SVUSD high schools attended the fair, in hopes to get their questions answered.
The stress of preparing to apply to colleges is a common feeling for many high schoolers when attending this fair. Students are put to ease as they discover colleges they never thought to apply to and find out about different criteria colleges look for in an applicant from the admission officers. Sophomore Natalie Baker said, “I definitely feel more prepared to apply for college than I was going into the fair.”
While the college fair was taking place, there was also a workshop for the SAT/ACT testing. Speakers came and discussed the importance of preparation for college. With the UCs and other colleges not factoring in the SAT/ACT into applications, some students do not see the value in taking the tests anymore. The stress of preparing for the test and the cost seems to outweigh the pros of taking it. But during the workshop students were able to find out that the SAT/ACT would still be beneficial even at the UCs. “I didn’t know that taking the SAT was still super beneficial,” said Katelyn Sodek, sophomore.
