On the morning of Thursday, November 28, the 11th Annual Turkey Trot was held at the Rancho Simi Park. For those who are unaware of Turkey Trots, it is an event typically hosted on the morning of Thanksgiving where people usually run a 5K race.
This year, students from Key Club and AFJROTC had the opportunity to volunteer to help out. Before the race, students were up before the sun rose to set up tables, canopies, medals, fences, and a water station. Once people started to show up, students would check them in, and hand out bibs and a shirt. Bibs are papers with numbers and have a technology that tracks the time you finish the race, runners will attach it to their clothing.
The race started at 8 a.m. and concluded once all the runners were finished and were given a medal. The fastest time of the day was 17:33 by Ryan Rosaasen (male 19). With over 370 participants from babies in strollers, canine friends, and kids as young as 8 to people aged 81, the Turkey Trot is an event enjoyed by many. No matter how slow or fast you go it is an event welcomed to all. Freshman cross-country runner, Connor Alexander shared, “I had fun running on Thanksgiving with my family!”
Afterwards the students packed up all the stuff from the event into a truck and were finished by 10:30 a.m. and were set to enjoy a Thanksgiving feast with their families. Sophomore, Madison Boucher said, “It feels good to help other people on Thanksgiving.”
