Staying in Shape at Home

Thomas Rocco

Staying fit is important at all times during life and now especially during quarantine at home. Many students stay in shape playing a sport or going to the gym. Now that those options are not allowed, it is important to still workout every day to keep your body and mind healthy. What counts as a good work out, and how do you do that at home? Not everyone is as lucky as Eric Fox who said, ¨I have a whole gym in my garage.¨ You are going to have to get creative and find different ways to get that much-needed exercise. It is important to have a schedule and try to stick to it. You are much more likely to exercise if you do it at the same time each day, but it is ok to just find free time each day to exercise. Remember that any exercise is better than no exercise. Get off your bed, your couch, or your gaming chair and get moving.

There are many things that you can do to exercise, but one important thing to focus on is getting your heart rate up and getting an aerobic workout. One way to do this that your parents would love is vacuuming the house, cleaning the showers, washing your car, or mowing the lawn. Doing chores around the house is a great way to get in exercise and help your family at the same time. Taking your dog for a run is another fun way to exercise that is good for you and your dog. On the more fun side, you can crank up the music and dance around your room. TikTok is also a great way to get your move on. Many families still have their Wii and can play virtual sports. If you have an old hula hoop or jump rope lying around the garage, they give you an excellent core workout plus an aerobic one. There are many gyms and personal trainers offering free online exercise classes right now. If you want to get away from your house and clear your mind you can go on a bike ride or a jog around your neighborhood. These are just a few examples of things you can do to get an aerobic workout.

Strength training is also important to many students. Not being able to go to the gym is a problem, especially for athletes who need to stay in shape to hopefully return to their sports in the future. Brian Albert said, ¨I have some weights at home, but I have had to get creative to get a good workout.¨ There are many ways you can get a good workout. You can lift with gallon water bottles and they get even heavier if you freeze them. You can also lift different heavy objects in your house. Good old push-ups and sit-ups work well too. You can even borrow your dog or little sibling and do leg lifts and other lifts with them.

If you are stuck completely on what to do, you can always look online and see what the Olympic or pro athletes are doing to stay in shape. It is important for your body and mind to stay healthy during this lockdown stay at home order so you can come out of this a better person.
