2021 films: upcoming and newly released

2021 has been a hectic year so far and as the year goes by more and more things are being introduced and released, one of which is movies. Many movies have already been released and there are still many more to come within the following months. Here is a list of upcoming and newly released movies. 

First up on the list of upcoming releases is Marvel’s “Black Widow”. This long-awaited action movie, starring Scarlett Johansson and David Harbour, is set to release on July 9. “Black Widow” is a standalone film with the protagonist being Black Widow, a member of the Avengers in MCU, and was first introduced to the franchise in “Iron Man 2” released in 2010. “I’m glad it’s coming out soon,” said junior Emma Gaines. “I definitely think it will live up to the expectations.”

Next on the list is “Dune”, directed by Denis Villeneuve and starring Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya. This sci-fi and adventure film is a remake of the original 1984 “Dune” and is said to be released on October 1. The storyline for the 2021 “Dune” consists of the young Duke Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) leading nomadic tribes into a battle to control Arrakis, a desert planet originally known as Dune. This upcoming remake is premiering in theaters and on HBO Max. 

Another upcoming movie is “Ghostbusters: Afterlife”, a fourth addition to the iconic film series “Ghostbusters”. This 2021 upcoming film, directed by Jason Reitman and featuring Finn Wolfhard and Paul Rudd, is set to be released on November 11 and will also premiere in IMAX, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema. “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” takes place 30 years after the events of the 1989 “Ghostbusters II” and follows a small family that recently moves to a new town and discovers their connection to the original Ghostbusters and their grandfather’s secret legacy. 

Moving onto the list of recently released movies is the long-anticipated “Godzilla vs. Kong”. The sci-fi and action film, directed by Adam Wingard, is a crossover sequel to the 2019 “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” and 2017 “Kong: Skull Island”. The plot consists of Kong and his protectors undertaking a journey to find his true home where along the way they cross paths with the enraged Godzilla as he plans a swath of destruction across the globe. “Godzilla vs. Kong” was released on March 31 and is available to watch in theaters and on HBO Max. “I actually just recently watched it on Sunday and it’s good,” said Junior Summer Meeks. “I think this is probably one of the movies everyone should watch at least once.” 

Following up on recently released movies is Disney’s “Raya and the Last Dragon”. The family and adventure Disney film was released on March 5 and was directed by Carlos López Estrada. “Raya and the Last Dragon” is an animated film that follows up on a lone warrior, Raya, who is on a quest to find the last dragon and restore peace upon their world. This film is also Walt Disney Animation’s first film to spotlight a Southeast Asian heroine. It’s now available to watch in theaters, Disney Plus, Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Google Play Movies & TV, Vudu, and Youtube.
